"Read Alouds"
Read aloud to your child. “Read alouds” support vocabulary growth and encourage the development of listening comprehension skills. Teachers incorporate “read alouds” into lessons to build background knowledge and vocabulary. At home a “read aloud” can focus on reading for enjoyment while still promoting comprehension and vocabulary development. As you read, stop every now and then… think aloud about a character’s feelings, predicament, or wonder aloud about a word that might be new to your child. Allow a conversation to ensue that will help your child reach conclusions.
The following tips, published in Reading Today (February 2008), highlight additional points that will help promote reading in your home:
-Set a good example as a reader
–let your child see you reading every day.
-Get a subscription in your child’s name to an age appropriate magazine.
-Make reading fun – a time that you and your child look forward to spending together. -Check out The Read Aloud Handbook by Jim Trelease (New York: Penguin Books, 1995). It is loaded with fun tips and reading recommendations.
-Keep lots of books, magazines and newspapers around the house. Visit the library often. Shop for books at garage sales, yard sales and used bookstores. -Don’t fret if Captain Underpants has captivated your child rather than Robinson Crusoe. The important thing is, he’s reading! Encourage it, and he’s likely to move on to more sophisticated titles as he gets older.
At SES, we are fortunate to have regular readers in the school: Roger Rivera, Ray Foley, Roger Stevens and Eric Rasmussen. Our students, preschool through grade six, look forward to special reading times with these animated, lively readers. We are grateful to all four men for showing our students how much they enjoy reading.
Last week, a special guest read to our students in grades 1 & 2. Dave Soucy, from Green Mountain National Golf Course, mesmerized listeners with an old favorite using special voices and props. What a treat for our students!
