Sherburne Elementary School French Program
The Sherburne Elementary School has an on-going, developmental French program, staffed by a fully certified French teacher. The program begins in kindergarten and builds on core ideas and themes until the sixth grade. The focus of the curriculum includes mastery of many common words and phrases; it includes instruction on basic grammar concepts and exposure to many customs and contributions of the French culture. The curriculum follows the Vermont Framework of Standards and Learning Opportunities, utilizing primarily oral and auditory skills at the K-3 grade level; introducing the written component in grades 4-6.
French is taught once a week, 30/40 minutes for grades K-3, and 45 minutes for grades 4-6.
The goals of the French program are as follows:
· To become sensitized to the sounds of the French language
· To learn French words and expressions
· To be introduced to the French culture, especially as found in America
· To become aware that there are other styles, traditions and habits in various cultures, and to have fun exploring these various differences
The goals are accomplished through exercises, gestures, songs, dances, stories, skits, posters, pictures, art projects, cassettes and video, cooking, food and some use of the internet.
In preparation for an advanced course of study in Middle School, the students receive a firm introduction to the French language, some study of the history and customs, and an awareness of French speaking people throughout the world. This program develops confidence in the students’ ability to handle a second language. It also develops global awareness and a relaxed attitude towards the acquisition of a second language. There is a strong sense of continuity between the elementary school and the middle school.
Sherburne Elementary School supports the French program both philosophically and monetarily. An annual budget is approved for the acquisition of new materials that continually help to reinvigorate the program and help to challenge the students. French has been offered at the Sherburne Elementary school for over 15 years continuously.
